Demonstrating The Gospel

How do we demonstrate the gospel?

The Holy Spirit is God’s personal presence moving through the world and in the lives of his people. This Spirit rested upon Jesus, empowering him to proclaim the good news to the poor, heal the sick, cast out demons, give sight to the blind, and prophesy. This same power is alive in you.

Teachings

Before you begin the practices with your community, listen through these teachings to understand why this practice is important and discover what it can do in your life.

1

A Familiar Stranger

How do we know the Holy Spirit, not as a force to be captured but as a person to know and be known by?

2

Presence: Water

Scripture introduces us to the Holy Spirit through metaphor. What does the metaphor of water show us?

3

Person: Breath

What does the metaphor of breath show us, and how does the Spirit breathe into and through us?

4

Power: Dove

We have the same Spirit as Jesus to continue the full ministry of Jesus. What gets in the way of this?

5

Do Justice, Love Mercy, Walk Humbly

The Spirit empowers us to be sent out to who Jesus calls "the least of these."

6

Prophecy

The God of the Bible is radical not only because He is personal but also in the way He chooses to speak to us.

7

Healing

Through the life of Jesus, we see that healing feels like hoping, confronting, waiting, and laughing.

8

The Subtle Tragedy of Nicodemus

When Jesus awakens something in our heart he is inviting us to true life.

9

Buried in the Land of Our Inheritance

How do we move from finding freedom in Jesus to living in it?

Practice

Follow along with each part of this practice. We recommend you work through it with your community, a small group triad, a weekly meal with friends or neighbors, your roommates, whatever works. Get a group of people, set a time each week to share a meal, then talk and pray for about an hour. Transformation happens in community.

1

An Invitation

For many, the Holy Spirit is a mysterious force, but we are invited to know him as a person.

2

To Come & To Become

Scripture uses the metaphor of water to describe the Spirit, bringing healing, order to chaos, and life.

3

Breath

The Spirit has the power to create from breath, to bring life by speaking. The Spirit gives us words of healing.

4

Fasting For The Sake of Feasting

We want to practice being emptied so that we may be filled with the Spirit, just like Jesus was, to do what he did.

5

Serving Together

Throughout Scripture, we see that the Spirit of God draws people to the margins.

6

Prophecy

Prophecy is a gift that the Spirit gives, a deeper revelation of who he is and his heart for us.

7

Healing

Healing feels like hoping, confronting, waiting, and laughing. Healing always starts with hoping.

8

Worship Together

We see the people of God responding to moves of the Spirit through corporate celebrations.

9

Naming the Terrain

We are moving out of a season of deliverance and into a season of inheritance.

Recommended Reading

Follow along with the recommended reading. We want to continually expand our minds and understanding of the way of Jesus. God wants us to love him not only with our hearts, souls, and strength, but with our minds as well.
